1st part of Harrisburg Half by baristanate at Garmin Connect - Details
First part of Harrisburg Half by baristanate at Garmin Connect - Details
This morning Cindy dropped me off at the starting line for the Harrisburg Half. I decided that I'm going to try to run the entire race each week. Not all at once of course, but as I'm training, I feel like I should train exactly where I will be running the race. This will keep me sharp and help me remember the hard parts of the race.
I'm going to be researching how to overcome this humidity, because it is getting inside my head. A wise friend told me recently that it's important to set goals, but to not let what I didn't do today impact my run tomorrow. Good stuff. Thanks buddy!

My run 06/24/10
So I guess I was a little ambitious today. I said I'd run 5.5 miles. I figured that'd be a piece of cake since at 7:30am it couldn't be "that" hot. Well it was... so I am going to try again tomorrow and start much earlier... Maybe I can drag myself out of bed by 6am? It's so much harder to do when no one else is keeping me accountable. Maybe by posting it, that will keep me accountable.
One benefit of my watch right away is that it gives the pace so I know when I out too quick. I realized than in order to actually run the half in 2 1/2 hours (as opposed to 2hrs 50 minutes) I need to run about an 11:30/mile for all 13 miles (give or take a little bit). I have a tendency to start out at 10 minute mile so it's good to know that I need be slow and steady and not rush.
I'm learning.... it's a forever long process, but I'm learning and trying to apply these things to real life too!

This heat and new toy
So I've been a slacker the past 3 days. No excuses, but I did miss Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays workout. I'm at least 9.5 miles behind schedule this week, but I have off tomorrow (Thursday), so I plan do do at least 5.5 miles. Saturday is my long run at 7 miles. My buddy won't be able to run with me Saturday, but if I start early enough then it won't be too hot. 7 miles isn't terribly long... if it's not too hot. My biggest struggle last year was the heat. Trying to figure out how to beat it this year. By best guess is run earlier or later.
Anyway, today I received the Garmin forerunner 305 that Cindy purchased for my birthday. As mentioned earlier I couldn't convince myself that this was a good idea until I made it through a year of training. Let's do it again this year... and with style!

I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow. I plan to report that I ran at least 5.5 miles.

Long run 6/12/10 pt 2
This morning I ran just under seven miles. My goal was at least six today. The run felt pretty good today for several reasons. First, I took off yesterday from running so my legs were fresh this morning. Second, it was in the morning and it is easier to run in the morning (I'll spare you the details why). Third, I ran when it was much cooler and with a nice breeze. The fourth reason why today went well was what I mentioned earlier. I ran with one of my buddies.
This has to be the first time since high school that I ran more than just a couple days in one week. The trick is whether or not I can do this next week and the next and the next.... I think many people can start out strong, but the determining factor is consistency and whether I can continue doing this weekly.
You might be asking.... why running Nate? or what's the motivation to run another half marathon since I did it last year? more on that later!

Long run 6/12/10 pt 1
The plan this morning is to run to city Island at my half marathon pace (much slower). I'm meeting friends on the other side of the walking bridge. That distance is about 2.5 miles. Then I'll run whatever we can run together (with the baby) which will probably be about 2 miles or so. Then I can run back home (another 2 miles). This will make it so I do 6.5 miles. Either way, I think I'll map my run to see exactly how far it is.
In regards to a GPS running watch I have been considering this for about a year. Last year I said no because, well it was expensive and I don't like spending a lot of money on really anything. I also wanted to make sure that I was serious about this running thing. So I think I am, but time is the only thing that will really tell the story. I'll write about my running experience either today or tomorrow. I'm taking Sunday off from running so I'll have a little bit of time to post about this "long run" experience.

:o)
I'm enjoying making running a specific part of my day. Today, I'm taking the day off from running because I anticipate running at least 4 miles tomorrow. I hope I will 6, but I'm not going to stress about it. These long runs can be enjoyable if I have someone with me. I'm going to be running with one of my friends who has a little baby boy so we'll be running on his schedule. What will probably happen is I will run extra either before or after I run with them. I mentioned that I'm not looking for speed at all, but rather to remind myself what it's like to run more than just a 5K.

I'm looking forward to a good run
Today has not gone the way I had planned, but there is always running to save the day. Hopefully I'll be able to run a decent distance (at least 3 miles). Today I'm not worried about the time at all. I probably won't do much tomorrow other than maybe walk, but Saturday (since I have off), I'd like to get up and just run until I can't any more. Hopefully that run will be 6 or more, but I'm not going to be frustrated if it's not.
Pray that I find a training partner... quickly... in other words yesterday. I'm not sure I have what it takes to go beyond 6 miles by myself.... If I can't do it now... I have a very long road ahead of me and the Harrisburg Half will be quite interesting to say the least.
There are many benefits of having a training partner for me. First, companionship is huge since I'm a relationship guy. Second accountability and having someone else push me when I don't really want to run any further, but know I need to do so.

reality check
I ran the balloon 5K race in Hershey. It was fairly hot and apparently I was not properly hydrated. My time last year for this same race was about 27 minutes (I walked a little). However, this year I ran the whole thing, but my time was 31 minutes. I am happy that I was also able to pass at least two people on the way to the finish line. As a result, I decided that I must get in better shape. Therefore, I ran Monday and Tuesday from my house to Cindy's work (It's about 2.5 miles or so). Today on the other hand since it was raining I did not run.
I'm going to print up a specific plan for my running for the Harrisburg Half. The trouble is this year I don't have a running partner... This is a tremendous drawback because last year I was able to do something that I genuinely enjoy with one of the guys who was in my wedding. If you think of it, I'd REALLY appreciate it if you'd pray that I'd find someone else that is either my skill level (which is not that high) or better who's willing to stick with me and pull me along. There will be some extremely hot days that I'm not going to feel like running... last year I had the accountability of another guy... this year it's just me... not thinking that's going to go over real well... I will keep you posted.... until next time.
